Chilume Social Service Society

Uplifting marginalised women, unemployed youth and economically vulnerable people in poor health .

Chilume works among the underprivileged rural and urban people who are economically weaker and from socially deprived castes. Chilume implements education, livelihood, women empowerment, skill development and health programs in rural Bangalore, Bangarpet, Kanakapura taluks and in the slums of urban Bangalore. Students from rural and urban slum areas always struggle to complete their college and to leverage their education for a promising career. The Pre University (Class XII) results of Karnataka state over the years indicate that only 45-55% of enrolled students are successful each year resulting in almost half of the enrolled students remaining college dropouts. Chilume has been striving to provide education and soft skill opportunities for the underprivileged students, economic and livelihood opportunities for marginalized women, employment opportunities for unemployed and unskilled youth and providing awareness and financial support for economically vulnerable in poor health

Press coverage to be uploaded

1. Pradeesh M, son of an auto driver is at the doors of a bright career

Introduction: Pradeesh is studying in the final year of Diploma at SET Polytechnic College in Kaggadasapura, Bangalore. His parents are Mr.Murali a auto driver on daily wages and mother Mrs. Manjula a housewife . He has one brother studying in 8th Standard.

Problem: As his father runs rented auto on daily basis i.e. he has to earn and give Rs.500/- per day to the owner and he is the only bread winner of the family. Due to poverty, he could not enrol his son for a college but got admitted in diploma course. Pradeesh being merit student took it as a challenge to complete diploma and started supporting his family by joining some job.

Intervention: During the village visit of Chilume staff, the local anganawadi teacher referred him and we visited his house for survey and enquired his studies. Due to poverty, they were unable to enrol him to college after he completed his second year. His father shared that his income was very meager and he was unable to pay final year’s fee. Pradeesh was determined to complete and insisted his parents to pay fee. Therefore parents borrowed loan from local money lender for higher rate of interest and were struggling to maintain family and repayment of debt.

Outcome: As Pradeesh was merit student and most confident intelligent boy, we decided to help him for his college studies. He used to attend all the training programs conducted by Chilume and he feels that he has improved a lot in soft skills and life skills such as communication, self-confidence, managing capacity. Parents are so grateful to Chilume for helping his son to complete final year diploma and make him earn very soon. Parent’s tension of paying loan is freed as we supported his college fee.

Family Feedback: "If we would have not met Chilume, our son’s future would have been in darkness, thank you Chilume!!!"

These words inspire us to do more.

In 2005, a group of 7 young people joined together as a group and wanted to carry forward the good work for the orphans and needy youth. They resolved to regularly save some money from their own salaries and initially supported 10 poor slum children in Bangalore. Later, in order to reach out to many needy and poor children, they registered the group as Chilume Social Service Society on December 28, 2006. Due to personal reasons, some of the members remained as supporters, while Mr Joseph A.T took up the organization and its functions as full-time director.

Chilume adheres to all government and legal provisions. It has availed 12A, 80G certificates in the year 2010, and in the year 2012, were covered under FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) from the Home Ministry of India. Later, Chilume accommodated like-minded professionals from all walks of life into the present Board, and in 2010, started work with full-pledged programmes. In 2010, Chilume joined forces with CSR programme and initiated Tailoring Skill Training Programme at Kanakapura. By the end of the year, 87 poor women completed training and were provided alternate job opportunities. Till date, CSR supports our skill development programmes. With support from CSR, Chilume opened a new chapter in Education sector. As many as 375 poor students are supported for their holistic education programme with financial support. With the CSR partners, we could bring drastic transformation impacting education aspirations of hundreds of less privileged students in Kanakapura, Bangarpet, and Bangalore North talukas.
